Welcome to the Quick Research Library Tutorial: An Information Literacy Tool. The Tutorial is an eight module interactive tool that was developed through a Title III Grant Project from the United States Department of Education at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland. The goal of Title III Grant Project is to strengthen the curriculum through the infusion of technological applications and collaborative active learning strategies into courses throughout the college.

This tutorial aims to help develop effective library research skills and critical thinking skills in all courses at Prince George's Community College as well as similar institutions and four year institutions. The tutorial consists of a series of self paced interactive instructional modules with short quizzes that are designed to teach the basic concepts of library research using the topic: What is the relationship between United States intelligence operations and counter terrorism?

While this tutorial focuses on a specific topic, it objectives are to teach basic skill for doing research and information literacy skills to find, retrieve, analyze, and use the information effectively for lifelong learning. Learning these skills provides access to the ever expanding universe of information and knowledge.

The first time that you use the tutorial, you are encouraged to complete the entire Tutorial in sequence. However, it is possible to select specific modules from the menu or Table of Contents to learn or review specific concepts. Students may also want to use the tutorial to review and reinforce what they have learned from the faculty Reference Librarian or in library instruction classes.

Faculty may assign students to complete the entire tutorial or individual modules as part of a course requirement. In addition, they may choose to coordinate specific research assignments with a librarian by using the tutorial as an instructional component. Faculty may also want to create links from their online syllabus or course Web pages to the tutorial.

Faculty librarians are eager and glad to explain in depth any aspect of library use and the research process. Library users are encouraged to direct questions in person or by telephone to faculty librarians at the Reference Desk during the Library's business hours. As reference librarians, research assistance is provided that is specific and personal. They are effective in contributing their knowledge and expertise of resources and the organization of information to the research process.

Before getting started on the tutorial, you will need to have the following computer skills to successfully complete this tutorial.

If you need to familiarize yourself with these skills, click on Mousing Around or Using the Computer Mouse. If you need additional help, be sure to ask a faculty librarian, instructor, or knowledgeable person to explain and demonstrate the techniques to you, then practice yourself before beginning the tutorial.
