Basic Glossary of Internet Terms

Browser is a piece of software such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer that allows a computer to access and display documents, view pictures, hear sound, and view video clips from the World Wide Web.

Directory provides access to information by subject categories with browsing capabilities.

Domain is the part of the Internet address such as com that shows the type of organization that developed the page or Web site.

FTP is the abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol. This protocol allows users to transfer files electronically from one computer to another.

Homepage or Home page is the first page that is viewed when the browser starts. It is also the page of a Web site that provides the introduction or content with links.

HTTP is the abbreviation for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is the set of rules by which Web pages are transferred across the Internet.

Link or Hypertext Link is an underlined word(s), phrase(s), or graphics on a Web page that transports the reader to additional or related information on the Internet.

Newsgroup is a discussion group that allows individuals with common interests to communicate with each other through email.

Search Engine is software and programming that searches the contents of pages and files on the World Wide Web.

Telnet is a protocol and application that allows a user to log onto another computer at another site and view or use its resources.

URL is the abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator. This is the address that defines a resource on the World Wide Web.

Web page is a single hypertext file or a page that is part of a Web site.

Web site is a collection of World Wide Web pages or files.

World Wide Web or WWW is an Internet protocol that uses a combination of graphics, text, media, and links to transmit information from various access points.
