Faculty Information for Prince George's Community College @ Andrews AFB

1413 Arkansas Rd
Andrews AFB, MD 20762
301-322-0778 or 301-981-5949
www.pgcc.edu/extensioncenters/

Entering the Base

  • You must have a long term badge to enter the base to get to your classroom. Call the AAFB office of Prince George’s Community College at 301-981-5949 or 301-322-0778 and tell us you are teaching at our center. If it is close enough to the start of classes, we also may be able to tell you the location of your classat that time.

  • If you already have a military ID you may use it to enter the base and do not need to get a long term badge.

  • We will need your full name, SSN, driver license number and tag number. AAFB Security Forces require this information. This information is kept strictly confidential. For faculty members, the long term badge is valid for one year. We will fax your information to the Visitor Center on the day you'll be coming to the base to get your long term badge. You may then drive to the main gate and tell the sentry you are on the base access list. Proceed to 1413 Arkansas Road, room 109. Once there, staff will give you the long term badge request letter which you will take back to the Visitor Center.

  • Once at the Visitor Center, which is open M-F from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., you will show the base pass request letter, driver license, and your car registration to Security Forces at the counter. You will be given a photo ID which you will present at the security check point every time you enter the base grounds.

  • This also applies if you are teaching a late starting class. You may come in during the first week of class or you may call us at least a week in advance of your class start time so we may fax the information to the Visitor Center and you will follow the same procedure as mentioned above to get your long term badge.

  • A college staff person will also be at the Visitor Center during the first week of classes only from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Call 301-322-0778 to make sure someone will be there.

  • Student passes are good only for the semester they are attending classes on base and expire on the last night of class. We ask that you remind your students to turn their expired badges in at our office on the last night of class or drop it off at the Visitor Center during operating hours.

Look on our website for Andrews AFB Frequently Asked Questions relating to getting a base pass (www.pgcc.edu/extensioncenters/). There you will also see maps and directions on how to get around the base to the classroom buildings.

  • The main office for Prince George's Community College operations on base is 1413 Arkansas Road.

  • Office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

  • On Friday, the office closes at 4:00 p.m. unless a weekender class is in session. When there is a weekender class, the office is staffed until 8 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. In the fall and spring semesters, we are open most Friday evenings.

  • Classroom buildings are in several locations around the base. You may call ahead to find out the location of your classroom the week before classes begin. Classroom assignments are usually not complete before then. We try to honor special room requests, but must take into account class size and other factors when assigning rooms

Parking

Do NOT park in reserved spaces, fire lanes, or on the grass. Reserved spaces are restricted 24 hours a day.

Inclement Weather Policy

The Andrews Degree Center follows the main campus for cancellation of classes to the weather or other emergencies. Please listen to one of the following radio stations: WMAL, WPGC, WTOP, WAMU, WASH, WHUR. The following TV stations also announce closings: WRC (4), WTTG (5), WJLA (7), WUSA (9) and Channel 8.

Children and guests in the Classroom

Neither children nor guests are permitted in any classrooms or labs. This is at the direction of the Base Education Office and is strictly enforced.

What faculty can expect from AAFB staff:

Rosters- We will provide you with a roster the first night of class. It will be delivered to your classroom in a sealed envelope.

Duplicating-

  • Our copier collates and staples up to 40 packets.

  • You must log in how many copies you make. If you can convince your academic department to give you a few reams of paper (or send it to us via the interoffice mail), we would really appreciate it.

  • If we find you are using a great deal of paper, we will contact your department to replenish our supplies.

  • Please arrange for reproductions of large quantities through your department on the main campus.

  • The office copier is NOT for student use.

Inter-office Mail-

  • Incoming and outgoing mail from/to campus is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday typically between 2-4 p.m.

  • Anything that arrives for you from campus or memos from the AAFB program supervisor is put in the mailbox here and brought to your classroom by one of our Extension Center Aides before the beginning of class.

Audio -Visual Equipment-

  • Call at least a day in advance (301-322-0778/0779) to reserve the AV equipment you need to conduct your class. We note it in our room schedule book.

  • You may, if you wish, reserve equipment for the entire semester at one time

  • If you reserve equipment, and then find you do not need it, please notify us

  • An Extension Center Aide, paid by the college, brings your requested AV equipment and mail to your classroom.

  • We have TV/VCRs, slide projectors, overhead projectors, and 16mm projectors as well as a computer with PowerPoint and projection unit on a rolling cart. We also have 2 Panasonic DVD/VCR combo players

  • Several rooms in building 3282 (Navy Training building) have permanently installed AV equipment owned by the Navy which you are welcome to use. If you are not sure how to use the Navy's equipment, please let us know and the Extension Center Aide can assist you.

Computer Lab - It will be unavailable during the spring 2005 semester due to renovations in the building. Normally, the lab is open the same hours as the office for you and your students to use in building 1413. For more information please call our office.

Memos from the Program Supervisor- Always read through your mail before class, particularly if there is a memo from the Program Manager, since it could be important, timely information that must be conveyed to your class as well. Often it is base information that may be critical to know before the next class meeting.

E-mail- The Program Manager has a GroupWise listserv of AAFB faculty and very often will use this method of communicating. Please provide the manager with your most frequently used e-mail address. Your GroupWise account will be used if you do not want to give out your personal work/home e-mail address.

Library Facilities-

  • Access to college library resources is through the computers in the college's computer lab in room 111, next to our administrative office.

  • The college library's online databases are available to students in our open computer lab.  Remote Access Guides are available as well as multiple reference guides in several academic areas provided to us by the campus library.

  • The college has formed a partnership with the Prince George's County Memorial Library System (the public library) to ensure that students can access the resources and support they need for research projects.

  • Ms. Norma Schmidt, campus librarian, is the primary contact for instructors regarding off campus library services. She can be reached at 301-322-0471.

Use of Kitchen Facilities- In the college's Andrews office, we have everything except the kitchen sink! You are welcome to use the refrigerator, toaster and the microwave. Naturally, this would be convenient only if you are teaching next door to our building in 1414.

What We Expect From AAFB Faculty

Faculty Information Cards-

  • Every semester we ask that our faculty fill out a brief information card. We put your name and the semester on it. We need to know your phone number(s), e-mail and other pertinent information. Also, you can check on the card whether or not you want this information given out to your students. Students often call here looking for our AAFB faculty. We want to help these students, but we need to know from you how you want us to assist them. If you do not provide us with this information, we will simply refer your student to your department on campus.

  • PLEASE bring the faculty information card to room 109 at 1413 Arkansas Road. It takes only a minute! Sometimes we cannot arrange a class evaluation because we have no way to reach you.

  • Also, it is wise in these post-9/11 times to keep this information with us in case of an emergency on base.

Class meeting times -

  • Please observe the published class hours.

  • Use the "Class Meeting in Other Than Assigned Classroom" form (available in our office) to notify us if your class will be canceled, moved to a different site, or if you will not be able to have your class meeting during the regular time.

  • Final exams, if you are giving one, are to be given during the last scheduled class meeting. We do not follow the exam schedule published in the schedule of classes

Audio-Visual Requests-

  • Call at least 24 hours ahead to reserve AV equipment. You may call the same day, but you may not get the equipment you want.  If you are unsure how to use any of the equipment, the Extension Center Aides are well versed in the use of all types of AV equipment, so ask for assistance when you make the reservation.

  • If you have ordered films from Media Services, please return them to our Arkansas Office, room 109, or you may tell us you need them picked up at the end of the night and one of our Extension Center Aides will pick them up and bring them to our office. We will then send them back through the interoffice mail system.

  • Do NOT leave films in the classroom unless you have notified us to have the Extension Center Aide pick them up. Other institutions use our classrooms during the day, so it's important to pick up all your belongings at the end of the class session.

Classroom Maintenance

  • We make every effort to make sure each classroom is orderly at the beginning of class. We ask that you and your students return chairs to their positions (rows) and dispose of litter.

  • Erase your boards at the end of class.

  • There is to be NO eating or drinking in your classroom.  Eating and drinking may be done during class breaks in the foyer or outside in nice weather. This is strictly enforced.

  • Building 3615 has a specific 'break room' with seats and snack machines.

  • Building 1413 has snack machines for those who are attending class in 1414.

  • Trash cans are provided either in your room, in the hallway or near the exit/entry to the building. Campus Facilities Management staff come out only a few times a year for major cleaning. We rely on our Extension Center Aides to take out the trash, but it is too much to ask them to pick up trash off the floor. Extension Center Aides will provide you with dry erase pens and erasers. Please notify the office if you need any of these things done in your classroom or if you need supplies.

  • Please remind students to take their trash out with them or place it in the receptacles provided. It is critical not to allow trash to blow outside because we are situated very close to the air strip/runway.

  • Smoking is NOT permitted in any of the buildings.  Use designated areas outside.  No tossing of butts on the grounds-use butt cans provided

  • Since we do not have custodial services each night like the main campus, we insist that rooms be usable for classes the following morning by the military. The items listed above may seem trivial; however permission to use military classroom space may be rescinded if we do not comply.
